Our Expertise

Stream is experienced in the design and operation of all major wireless technologies. We have an extensive history of providing expert consulting and engineering solutions for each of the following:

3G

3G (EVDO & UMTS) wireless services were first launched in 2004 and provide mobile data rates of at least 200 kbit/s. More recent 3G releases (HSDPA, HSUPA, Rev A, B) have achieved download speeds in excess of 1 Mbits/s. HSDPA plans to evolve to ~ 14 Mbit/s.

4G
4G (WiMAX & UMTS LTE) uses new radio access schemes (OFDMA, etc), multiple antennas (MIMO), dynamic channel allocation and channel scheduling to achieve theoretical peak download speeds of 100 Mbit/s for mobile communication and 1 Gbit/s for stationary communication.

4G+
While both WiMAX (launched in 2006) and LTE (launched in 2009), in their current forms, do not reach theoretical 4G data rates; both the WiMAX 2 and LTE Advanced networks planned for launch in the next several years will. These networks will ultimately be 100% IP requiring much different skill sets than the venerable circuit switched networks.

Mobile Broadband
The consumer’s insatiable appetite for smart devices has driven unparalleled growth in mobile broadband traffic which has transformed the way both network operators and equipment vendors win and lose business. This sustained and explosive growth in mobile data has been fuelled by new data hungry devices such as the iPhone and iPad. This has had an impact on everything from network design to customer acquisition.

Microwave
In 2006, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) auctioned 90 MHZ of spectrum in the 1.7 and 2.1 GHz bands for Advanced Wireless Services (AWS). The licensees must share spectrum with already existing commercial microwave systems as well as systems deployed by the U.S. government. Licensees relocate these incumbents to new spectrum. Note that this is very similar to what was required of license winners in the FCC’s 1996 PCS auction.
